Sonny and Carly’s Most Emotional Challenges on General Hospital

Published by

Sonny and Carly have had their share of happiness and heartbreak on General Hospital.

It looks like the couple are in store for another dose of the latter, now that Sonny’s father, Mike (Max Gale), appears to be battling serious memory issues. Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) could be facing the anguish of watching a loved one battle dementia.

And then there’s Nelle, who is determined to gaslight Carly because, well, she’s Nelle.

This is not the first time they’ve had to overcome major adversity. Here’s a look back at Sonny and Carly’s most emotional challenges.

The Kidnapping
Faith Roscoe conspired with Michael’s biological father, A.J., to kidnap Sonny’s children. Although the feds rescued Kristina and Morgan, Michael remained at large.

Later, the kidnapper phoned Sonny and Carly and fired a gun, pretending to have killed Michael. Sonny and Carly were devastated and held a memorial for their young son. Weeks later, the pair learned it was all a ruse.

Hit Gone Wrong
Michael ended up the victim of a hit on his father when Claudia Zacchara hired a hitman to take out Sonny at his warehouse. The bullet ended up hitting Michael in the head, and he was rushed to the hospital and slipped into a coma.

Doctors gave Sonny and Carly the devastating news that their son’s condition was permanent, so they sent him to a long-term care facility. A year later, he miraculously awakened.

Michael Heads to Prison
Claudia struck again when she kidnapped a pregnant Carly, delivered her daughter Josslyn at a cabin, and attempted to run off with the infant.

Michael arrived in time to save his mother and baby sister, but killed Claudia in the process. Despite an elaborate coverup, the truth was discovered, and Michael was convicted of murder. Sonny and Carly feared for their son’s life behind bars.

Jason’s “Murder”
Carly and Sonny mourned Jason’s (Steve Burton) “death,” after Faison lured him to the docks, shot him, and kicked him into the river. Attempts to find the body were futile, so they were unable to give him a proper burial.

The couple was crushed, each trying to cope with the loss of their best friend. It would be five years, before they’d learn he was still alive.

Morgan’s Death
Thanks to Ava (Maura West) switching Morgan’s (Bryan Craig) bipolar meds with placebos and Liv (Tonja Walker) planting a bomb in Julian’s (William deVry) car, Sonny and Carly’s only biological son spun out of control, wound up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and ended up dead.

The trauma initially split the couple when Carly believed Sonny was responsible for their son’s death. In the end, they reconciled and grieved their unspeakable loss, together.

General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for air times.
