Soaps’ Most Popular Couples: General Hospital’s Sonny and Brenda

The pairing of Sonny Corinthos and Brenda Barrett on General Hospital remains one of the most popular in the show’s 53-year-history.

Brenda (Vanessa Marcil) was just getting over her failed “romance” with Jagger Cates (Antonio Sabato Jr.) when she met the sexy and older Sonny (Maurice Benard). The attraction between them was almost instantaneous.

Everyone warned Brenda how dangerous Sonny was, but she refused to believe them. While dating Sonny, Brenda grew into a confident woman through his encouragement.

The pair eventually moved in together, but after learning that Brenda wore a wire in an attempt to prove her friends wrong about Sonny’s underhanded dealings, he broke things off with her. He later married the daughter of another mob boss, Lily Rivera, when she became pregnant with his child.

Knowing what having a child meant to Sonny, Brenda soon became involved with Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) and they impulsively married. Brenda returned to the city just as Sonny’s wife Lily and their unborn child were killed in a car explosion meant for Sonny.

Sonny eventually wanted Brenda back and dug up Jax’s presumed dead wife, Miranda. The couple continued to reunite and be torn apart for several years until one fateful day when Sonny told Brenda he had “never been able to let her go.” They then finally became officially engaged.

The couple married in 2011, but their happiness was short-lived Sonny drugged Jax and framed him for an attempted rape. Brenda said she would never forgive Sonny for this misdeed and left him.

After returning to Port Charles in 2013 and attempting to reunite with Sonny, Brenda made the heart-wrenching decision to head back to her old life in Rome when she spotted Sonny at the airport. She asked him to come with her, but he said it was not the right time for them, leaving Brenda to board the plane alone.
