Former General Hospital (GH) and Port Charles actress, Anne Jeffreys, has passed away at age 94.
Jeffreys, who played Amanda Barrington on GH, was born Anne Carmichael in 1923 in Goldsboro, North Carolina and started her career with voice training (hoping for an operatic career) and as a model. It wasn’t long before she was put under contract respectively by Republic and then RKO studios.
She first started to appear in movies in 1942 and was a part of classics like the Dick Tracy movies in the ’40s,. She also had a co-star role opposite Frank Sinatra in the war-era musical, Step Lively in 1944.
On television, she starred in two series with her second husband, Rod Sterling — Topper, also with Leo G. Carroll and Love That Jill. She also guested on many shows like Wagon Train, Dr. Kildare, Battlestar Galatica, Vega$, as well as multiple episodes of Fantasy Island, Falcon Crest, and Baywatch, where she played David Hasselhoff’s mother.
Her first soap opera job was on Bright Promise, originating the role of Sylvia Bancroft, but it was her role as Amanda Barrington on GH that most soap fans remember her for. She even took the role to Port Charles, where they gave her a family — Rebecca Staab as daughter-in-law Elizabeth and Erin Hershey as her granddaughter Alison.
She and Sterling married in 1951 and had three sons. They remained married until he passed away in 2006.
