Actor Robert Hogan had a decades-long career in daytime, primetime, film, and stage, and was probably best known to soap audiences for his role as family patriarch Vince McKinnon on Another World. But that was just one of many roles he embodied over the years that endeared him to fans.
The talented star passed away at 87 years old on May 27, 2021, due to complications from pneumonia. Hogan, with an acting career spanning six decades, starred on stage, television, and film from New York to Los Angeles, appearing off and on Broadway, in countless regional theaters, on nearly every daytime drama, and on more than 100 primetime shows and the big screen.
Born in Jamaica, Queens on September 28, 1933, Hogan joined the army to serve in Korea. He returned to New York to study engineering at NYU, but after an aptitude test, he determined that acting was a better fit. He was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the rest is history.
Hogan’s daytime credits include early appearances on As the World Turns as L.J. McDermott, General Hospital as Dr. Phil Brewer #2 and years later as Burt Marshall, Days of our Lives as Will Austin and later as Scott Banning, Sr., and longer stints on Peyton Place as Tom Winter, Another World, All My Children as Dr. Bell, and One Life to Live as Charles Briggs.
On primetime, he played everything from a helicopter pilot on M*A*S*H to a judge on Law & Order. He won the Outer Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of Clarence Darrow in the real-life drama Never the Sinner on stage.
An interesting side note to Hogan’s life, and a salute to his integrity and how many people he touched during his long career, is that the main character in Hogan’s Heroes was named after him. He was also featured onscreen when Leonardo DiCaprio’s character mentions him by name in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood script as that great guy “Bobby Hogan,” with an old episode of F.B.I. airing behind DiCaprio.
Diagnosed with Vascular Alzheimer’s in 2013, he still was able to work and thrive in the entertainment industry for many years. Hogan is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, author Mary Hogan, his three children, Chris, Stephen, and Jud, from a previous marriage to artist Shannon Hogan, and two grandchildren, Susanna and Liam.
