BREATHING. Every day. At home. Or some spot. In a hammock. On a boat. While I sleep. On your birthday. ON MINE. Am I closer to the first, or the last? I look in a mirror and don’t know. Change so slow that I don’t even know until one day I find a single hair on the head actually connected to my body is gray?! How?! It wasn’t there yesterday. Or even 10 minutes ago. I know it for a FACT. All this time I just thought I was BREATHING. And I suppose I was, but apparently there’s been more going on than just that! Older? Every year? TODAY even. Watch it all shift as time slowly and perfectly dries up. I look in the mirror and somehow understand more of what I see TODAY than I did YESTERDAY. Or for that matter, even 10 minutes ago. So. With another revolution around the sun beneath my belt I say…hey! I wear a lot less makeup than I used to, but it’s the same face. I’m happy about that. Same nose, same eyes… just a bit more life lived in it… And I enjoy looking out a bit more than being looked at right now… but all art is ultimately the same at its core…. there’s what we can control and what we cannot. There are slightly different tools, there are limited choices. And there is always the art of managing our Selves, despite whatever is happening, despite whomever is saying whatever. That art I will be forever practicing, forever trying to polish and be better at. #doingmybest
