It was 2018 when soap opera legend Susan Lucci was paying for purchases and felt a heaviness in her chest that led her to believe she was having a heart attack. She was rushed to the hospital and although she learned she did not have a full-on heart attack, she did have blockages that led to two stents into damaged arteries.
Since then, the now-74-year-old actress has been vocal about heart conditions in women, urging her peers not to ignore unusual chest pain — as well as to keep healthy with preventative measures.
On Wednesday, Lucci took to Instagram to remind women once again to take care of their health. In fact, she is now the National Ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Movement.
“I am so very privileged to be part of this endeavor for the Amerian Heart Association. This has been a very hard year with COVID-19 we have all experienced, and still, heart disease is the number one killer of women,” she said in a video. “It kills more women every year than all cancers put together.
“So I am so honored to speak to you and say to you, as women, take good care of yourselves,” she added.
Lucci spent her entire daytime career bringing the formidable Erica Kane to life on All My Children. She played the character on ABC from 1971 until it left the broadcast airwaves in 2011, becoming one of the rare daytime icons to become a household name outside of soaps.
In fact, she is so dedicated to Erica that there is word that she will bring the character back to life in the new primetime version of the soap created by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos (formerly AMC’s Hayley and Mateo) now called Pine Valley. And we can’t wait to see her in action again.
