Liz and Carly will never be BFFs but in some recent scenes on General Hospital, the two women found common ground in light of the fact that they’ve been recently widowed. Also, Liz had something to say to Carly, which couldn’t have been easy given their past. For being able to open her character’s heart in an extremely difficult situation, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors on Rebecca Herbst.
At the cemetery where both women come to mourn their mates, Elizabeth Webber Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst) apologized to Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) for believing that Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) had killed her husband Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth).
She lamented for not knowing that Jason wouldn’t have lied to their son Jake (Hudson West) when he said that he was innocent. Taking her heartfelt introspection to another level, Liz confessed, “Honestly, I did know. But instead of admitting that, I dug my heels in and I hung on.”
Carly assured Liz that while she was furious with Liz, Jason was not. “He understood and he still does,” said a compassionate Carly. It’d be too easy to call Carly’s understanding for Liz out-of-character but Carly knows what it’s like to lose a husband in light of Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) “death.”
Liz added that what also hurt her was that Jason wouldn’t change his feelings about Franco. “I used to hate your relationship with Jason,” admitted Liz, conceding, “What you and Jason have is real. It’s powerful. I respect that.” She then thanked Carly for standing by Jason during his incarceration.
The writers chose to have Carly meet Liz halfway, making their scenes even richer. Carly appreciated Liz’s apology. “It’s really hard to admit when you’re wrong,” said Carly, who infused a bit of humor into the dramatic situation by noting, “I’m terrible at it.”
Carly said she could see where Liz was coming from because she’d lost her husband and as much as she wishes she couldn’t, Carly can relate to that feeling. Next, the two women talked about how painful it is on a day-to-day basis as they go through life not having the men they once loved to help them navigate through life. “It’s like walking a tightrope. It’s okay if we don’t look down,” Liz lamented.
Carly said there are benefits to coming to the cemetery alone. However, this time, fate had two rivals be there at the same time. Though, thanks to great writing and performances by both, the two may never be rivals again — certainly, not in the same way. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC.
