Over the last few weeks, General Hospital hotelier (and mafia wife) Carly has had to confront more than one person questioning the life choices she has made being married to the mob. First, Sam wondered how she does it as she realized she just couldn’t do it anymore. Then, Josslyn had to be honest that sometimes she wishes she led a more normal life. Carly heard what was being said, but she brushed it off as always. Then, reality hit this past week and Laura Wright knocked it out of the park, earning our Performer Of The Week honors.
This week certainly wasn’t the first time Carly (Laura Wright) had to fear for Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) life, and also not the first time she’s questioned being married to a man whose line of ‘work’ puts her family in danger on a 24/7 basis. But this time she had to do it on Christmas Eve.
Carly never expected Jason (Steve Burton) to walk in and tell her that Sonny had plunged right into the icy waters of the Hudson River as he trailed mortal enemy Julian Jerome (William deVry). Wright made us feel Carly’s dread and terror when a water-logged Jason walked into her living room and delivered the news.
After an unsuccessful trip searching for Sonny, she and Jason had to pretend nothing ever happened as she went about Christmas Eve with family and put on a smile. Wright managed to make Carly’s effort to keep things normal seem effortless but as soon as she was alone, we felt her pain as she broke down outside the front door and confessed everything to Jax (Ingo Rademacher), as she had to let it out with someone.
Once she was alone came the moment she’d been dreading. Wright showed us both Carly’s frustration and fear as the familiar police car lights flashed outside her window, illuminating the terror on her face as she either had to start telling her usual ‘see no evil, hear no evil’ lies or possibly mourn her husband. We felt Carly’s heart jump into her throat as the moment of truth lingered…a truth we have to tune in Monday to learn. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC.
