While Sam telling Jason not to come home after leaving on yet another job for Sonny seemed to come out of nowhere on General Hospital, we realize it had been building up for a while. In fact, we can trace it back to before the coronavirus hiatus when the Davis girls had it out during those epic scenes where Molly revealed she had slept with Brando. It was this moment that earned Kelly Monaco Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week accolades.
Many forget that during those scenes Kristina (Lexi Ainsworth) dropped a truth bomb on Sam about how she was addicted to the danger Jason (Steve Burton) brought her and Sam got several more truth bombs in the coming months from her drunk mother who told her not to judge her when she lived with a man who could get her children killed.
And then came the real bomb — the one Julian (William deVry) accidentally detonated at a full Floating Rib, which Jason had just left with Danny (Porter Fasullo) in tow. For a while, Sam didn’t know where Danny was and all she had was his hat and that’s when she finally knew in her heart the life she dove back into when Jason returned wasn’t the life for her anymore.
The scenes in which Sam told Jason not to come home, Kelly Monaco took us full circle through Sam’s life from the moment they brought Danny home. This time, instead of being a new mom, Monaco gave us Sam as a seasoned mom who could talks frankly with her kids. She asked Danny how he felt about Dad’s ‘line of work’ and he told her. He didn’t like it.
That’s where we could see the look on Sam’s face as she realized her mistakes. She even had a different version of Jason at one time, Jason’s twin Drew (Billy Miller), who didn’t want the mob life and walked away from it for her and their kids. She knew her original Jason could and never would do that.
The night Jason and Sam brought baby Danny home, he was called away to do a job for Sonny (Maurice Benard). He promised to come home but didn’t until five years later. This time as he left and promised to come home, Sam told him no, don’t. She couldn’t go through this anymore and needed a ‘normal’ life for her kids. And unlike Drew, she knew what Jason would choose.
Monaco gave us all the emotions this past week as Sam’s love for Jason never wavered, but her acceptance of being married to the mob finally did. We knew this wasn’t what Sam wanted, but it was still what had to be. Monaco made us feel Sam’s pain, as well as her quiet anger that Jason didn’t choose her, Danny, and Scout, but once again chose Sonny because, in the end, he will always choose Sonny.
