Johnny Wactor’s Brando on General Hospital mostly has been playing the strong silent type. However, the actor recently got to cut loose and show more emotions as Brando was placed in the unenviable position of having to kill his own mother! For his performance as a tortured and loving son, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Wactor.
Johnny Wactor — Performer of the Week
Brando tried to remain cool and collected when he saw that his evil boss Cyrus (Jeff Kober) was holding his mother Gladys (Bonnie Burroughs) bound and with a piece of duct tape across her mouth. We could see in his eyes that he wanted to rescue his mother, but he needed to plan his next move very carefully, given that Cyrus meant business!
Brando calmly asked what his mother had done that resulted in her being tied up. As if finding out from Cyrus that he knew Gladys was going to turn against him wasn’t bad enough, Brando also discovered that Cyrus found out that Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) is pregnant with Brando’s child!
We could see Brando simmering with rage as Cyrus taunted him over his relationship with Sasha, but he did his best to suppress that anger in order to deal with the matter at hand. What did Cyrus want to let Gladys go? Alas, Brando soon learned he wasn’t in the power position. Cyrus ordered him to kill his own mother. Then, Brando dropped his cool demeanor and informed Cyrus that he would not commit matricide.
Cyrus pointed out that certainly Brando felt that the lives of Sasha and his unborn child outweighed Gladys’s, given their past tenuous relationship? Brando coldly took the gun and aimed at his mother, who trembled that her life was about to end. We’re not really sure whether Brando was really going to do it or not – and maybe that was the point – because then, in a surprise move, he turned the gun on Cyrus!
He fired the pistol – only nothing discharged as Brando had been handed an empty weapon. “Performance issues?” quipped Cyrus, letting him know that he knew all along he was Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) plant. The mobster had given the spy chance after chance to switch his loyalties but he had refused to do so.
Brando begged Cyrus for the chance to say goodbye to his mom. Cyrus, who we know cares about his own mother Florence (Annie Abbott), granted the request. Brando professed his love for Gladys. Just then, the cavalry – AKA Carly’s (Laura Wright) armed men – burst in and began firing.
“I’ve got you, mom, you’re okay,” Brando told Gladys after seeing she’d been shot. He carried her out of the room and raced her to General Hospital. His actions proved that Cyrus’s claims that Brando didn’t care about Gladys were wrong. Brando’s charade as Cyrus’s crony is over, but Wactor is continuing to emerge as GH’s latest leading man. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
