Soaps are all about characters keeping secrets so, it’s been highly entertaining watching Nina Reeves as she keeps two of the biggest ones on General Hospital! The Crimson editor-in-chief is aware not only that Sonny is alive (living as “Mike” in Nixon Falls) but also now knows that Maxie’s daughter Louise is safe and sound living with Brook Lynn as her “daughter” Bailey. For her portrayal of a woman living on the edge, who is also a devoted friend and confidante, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors for GH on Daytime Emmy-winner Cynthia Watros.
Proving that hatchets can indeed be buried, Nina and Ava (Maura West) have put past animosities behind them and not only hang out as friends but also as temporary roommates. Ava is bunking with the woman she was once at odds with following her split from Nikolas (Marcus Coloma) and couldn’t help but notice that Nina’s smitten with her mystery man Mike.
Watros plays Nina being shy over her new beau, which is understandable, but the real reason she’s keeping mum is so that nobody learns Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) truly alive. The past Daytime Emmy winner plays both the secrecy Nina needs to keep and the joy her alter-ego is experiencing as she truly does care for Mike.
Ava observed to Nina that Nixon Falls offers her a place where she is able to — if nothing else — get away from Carly. Nina shared that Carly isn’t giving her a break due to Nina wanting a role in grandson Wiley’s (Erik and Theo Olson) life. Cynthia Watros plays the subtext in these scenes that it’s vital Nina keep her home away from Port Charles a secret so as not to reveal Sonny’s existence.
Nina not only appreciates a supportive ear but she is able to spare one as well. Maxie (Kirsten Storms) showed up on Nina’s door, clearly in a state of unrest. Throughout, Watros showed just how compassionate and caring Nina can be even when she thought Maxie might try to “kidnap” little Bailey.
“I will always love you no matter what you tell me,” Nina lovingly told Maxie. “Maxie, believe me, if there’s one thing I have learned how to do effectively it’s to keep a secret,” Nina assured Maxie. Then, the new mom blurted out that Brook Lynn’s baby Bailey is actually little Louise. (And Nina thought she was keeping a secret!)
In recent months, Watros has proven herself to be Daytime TV’s best friend. She’s not only helping “Mike” (AKA Sonny) get adjusted to his new life in Nixon Falls but she’s helping Maxie through one of the most traumatic periods in her life.
Gently, Nina tried to convince Maxie to bring Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) in on her plan but she refused. She pledged that Maxie would have an army of people protecting her from Peter (Wes Ramsey). While Maxie wasn’t unaffected by Nina’s words, she still felt she had to leave town for the sake of her daughter and keep Valentin in the dark.
Nina assured Maxie that she wouldn’t say anything to Valentin noting that “we all have our secrets” (that’s for sure!). At week’s end, it appeared as if Nina might tell Carly (Laura Wright) that Sonny is alive — if for no other reason than to keep her from committing bigamy now that she’s engaged to Jason (Steve Burton) but she refrained.
One reason soaps are all about secrets is that fans tune in tomorrow to see if they’ll be revealed. Cynthia Watros knows this and delivers performances that make viewers think that day could soon be coming! Brava!
