The Secret Subtext Between Carly and Z on General Hospital

John Oliver’s Z wasn’t just shutting Carly down. His response exposed a problem she’s had for years, and Joss may never truly move forward until it changes.

John Oliver silly-walked onto General Hospital to play Z, the WSB head who is so important that he doesn’t need a full name, only an initial. He made a deal with Joss and with Cassius. But he and Carly couldn’t come to an understanding. We think we know why.

Key Takeaways

  • Carly told Z to fire Joss from the WSB.
  • Z pointed out he doesn’t take orders from his agents’ mommies.
  • What Z was really trying to tell Carly.

Carly Refuses to Trust Joss’s Choices

Carly (Laura Wright) may make a habit of flirting with dangerous men — Brennan (Chris McKenna), Valentin (James Patrick Stuart), Sonny (Maurice Benard) — but she wants her precious Joss (Eden McCoy) safe and cosseted. She told Z to fire her, pronto! Or else Carly will continue frowning at him. Severely.

Z Drew a Boundary Carly Couldn’t Cross

Z laughed and noted that he doesn’t take orders from anyone about how he runs his super secret international organization that everyone knows about, whose agents don’t know what the word “undercover” means, and he certainly doesn’t take them from his agents’ mommies.

But what he was really telling Carly, what he was telling all parents in the audience, was: Stop helicoptering! Your children are adults! Don’t do their college applications for them! Don’t go on job interviews with them. Don’t pre-screen their Tinder hook-ups. Just stop!

The WSB Isn’t Carly’s Real Problem

John Oliver could have been speaking to all modern-day parents. But he was also specifically speaking to Carly. Because Carly doesn’t just obsess over every aspect of Joss’s life.

She also overparents Michael (Rory Gibson) like he’s still a tween, instead of a grown man with two children — and terrible taste in women. Carly needs to give it a rest. Donna (Scarlett Spears) better hope it happens sooner rather than later.
