Overkill? Should Sonny, Carly, and Jason Be In EVERY General Hospital Storyline?

General Hospital used to be about a hospital, generally speaking. Now, it’s about the mob — and the hangers-on who love them.

The heart, soul, and morality of the show is mob boss Sonny (Maurice Benard). When heroics are called for, his hitman, Jason (Steve Burton) steps up to the plate. Everything else is the purview of Sonny’s wife, Carly (Laura Wright).

It doesn’t matter what the storyline is, Kevin’s life — and love — being taken over by his psycho twin brother Ryan (Jon Lindstrom), Lulu’s (Emme Rylan) reunion with Dante (Dominic Zaparonga), Kristina (Lexi Ainsworth) falling prey to a cult — Sonny, Jason, and Carly need to be front and center.

Should this continue? What over 15,000 fans had to say about it:

It was a nail-biter, but 51% of you squeaked out a victory for yes, of course, anything that happens in Port Charles is absolutely Sonny, Carly, and Jason’s business. Yes, even Oscar’s (Garren Stitt) impending death.

Yes, even Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez) bullying Aiden. We’re sure they like to look over Monica’s (Leslie Charleson) hospital budget, too. Just to make sure the right diseases are being cured.

(Remember, as we learned during Sonny’s what-if-he’d-never-joined the mob episode that Robin would have died from AIDS had it not been for Sonny!)

No Means No
Or what if, now we’re just spit-balling here, 49% suggest… Sonny, Jason, and Carly were NOT a part of every single storyline.

What if, say, Liz (Rebecca Herbst) and Franco (Roger Howarth) dealt with their family on their own. The same goes for Lulu and Rocco, and yes, even Ava (Maura West) and Laura (Genie Francis) as they muddle through the Kevin/Ryan mess.

Sonny, Jason, and Carly have worked so hard for the unworthy people of Port Charles. Maybe they should sit themselves down for a beat. Or twelve.

General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
