Oscar, Oscar: Is Something Sorta Wrong With This General Hospital Story?

On General Hospital, Oscar just found out he’s dying. Yeah, that’s a bummer. But, it should be more than that, right?

He and Joss (Eden McCoy) aren’t together anymore, and Kim (Tamra Braun) and Drew (Billy Miller) want Oscar (Garren Stitt) to participate in a clinical trial that might help his brain tumor.

Oscar would prefer to pout. And sue to be emancipated from his parents so he can just die. We get it, a kid who learns he’s not likely to live long enough to graduate from high school is allowed to be depressed, to rage, and push people away. But does that make for entertaining TV viewing? Over 12,000 viewers render an opinion.

Missing Impossible
Something seems to be missing, 70% of you muse. Maybe it’s because Kim, Drew, and Oscar are still relative newbies to Port Charles. Drew spent more of his time as Jason (Steve Burton) than he has as Oscar’s dad.

Considering Drew doesn’t remember the man he used to be, we don’t know all that much about him, either. Kim has very little life outside of Drew, as her relationship with Julian (William DeVry) spins in place.

And Oscar… Oscar was kind of a whiny brat even before the brain tumor reveal (maybe that was one of the early symptoms?), which did complement Joss’s bratty entitlement nicely. But in order for this story to work, you have to care. And you just… don’t.

Poor Baby
You’d have to be made of stone not to feel for a poor, dying boy, a more maternal 30% chastises. Of course, you care about the pain Oscar is going through and his parents, too.

This is exactly the kind of story GH should be doing more of, one that deals with medical crises, not mob ones. You just hope Oscar recovers – there aren’t a lot of Quartermaines left, and he has the potential to become a favorite!
