Currently, on General Hospital, Laura has made it clear that she empathizes with Heather Webber’s situation. There’s a chance that due to the cobalt-poisoned hip replacement, Heather’s actions may not have been her own. We have seen Laura, Trina, and Portia give their thoughts on the matter. But have we seen Trina and Portia ever discuss the controversial topic with each other? If so, it’s been a while.
Mayor Laura Collins (Genie Francis — who shared a special connection with the late Richard Simmons) continually emphasizes that she’s merely researching the case and asking the right questions. But that’s where she feels her accountability ends. If a lawyer wants to take this case to court, then it’s up to the courts to decide what to do with Heather. Presumably, Heather (Alley Mills) could be freed with time served, get a reduced sentence, transfer to a mental health facility, or nothing could change at all. She serves the rest of her life in prison.
Portia’s perspective is well-known. Heather killed people, and she systematically targeted her baby in the name of her own daughter, Esme Prince (then-Avery Kristen Pohl). Therefore, Heather needs to stay behind bars forever…longer than that if Portia (Brook Kerr) had her way. Meanwhile, Trina (Tabyana Ali) is taking a more empathetic approach to Heather’s diagnosis.
For months, we’ve seen so many different configurations of conversations regarding this entire matter. Do you know who we’ve barely seen discuss, debate, and dissect this from all sides lately?.
If Portia and Trina could talk to each other in the present, maybe Portia would light a fire under her daughter. And then her empathy would temporarily take a back seat. On the flip side, if Portia and Trina had a meeting of the minds about Heather, maybe Trina (who continues to struggle with her grief) could get her mom to see where Laura is coming from. Now, Portia is threatening to stage a recall that would remove Laura from the position of mayor.
It’d be great for them to get on the same page (Portia’s side) before everything escalates. This is especially important since so many of Laura’s friends clearly see Laura’s perspective over Portia’s. Right now, it feels like Portia is on an island, and that’s unfair. Even Curtis has concerns since he visited Heather in prison. Portia needs allies, and hopefully, her daughter will attempt to see things from her mother’s side. They can agree to disagree, but we want to see the conversation.
But while Heather’s worst crimes may have been soaked in cobalt poison, she has broken bad for a long, long time. If she were released, maybe she would no longer murder people. But there’s no telling what she would be up to.
Needless to say, both Trina and Portia have viable and valuable opinions about Laura’s actions and their potential consequences. So, wouldn’t it be good to see the two get together to analyze the possibilities and compare notes? After all, we haven’t seen the mother and daughter interact in a long time.
