Sonya Eddy, who played Epiphany on General Hospital, won a posthumous Daytime Emmy last month in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Performance for her work on the ABC soap opera. Now, there’s some controversy over where that coveted statuette will reside.

Sonya Eddy: The Daytime Emmy Goes To…

According to TMZ, a battle related to Eddy’s Daytime Emmy in ongoing. The actress passed away in late 2022 and received a posthumous nomination. The awards were scheduled to be handed out in June 2023, but the Writers Guild of America strike and later, the Screen Actors Guild strike put much of the industry on hold — including the 50th Annual Daytime Emmys.

The awards ceremony was held on December 15, 2023. Eddy’s name was announced as the winner of the Supporting Actress category. Other nominees included GH’s Kelly Thiebaud (ex-Britt) and Brooke Kerr (Portia), Stacy Haiduk (Kristen/Susan, Days of our Lives), and Krista Allen (ex-Taylor, The Bold and the Beautiful).

Tyler Ford accepted Eddy’s statuette on her behalf. The two were producing partners and friends. Now, Robbie Eddy, Sonya’s younger brother, is speaking out. He told TMZ that the family had sent a letter to the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, asking for the golden girl to be given to Eddy’s family. Eddy’s relatives aren’t looking to take legal action against Tyler or the Daytime Emmys. However, they hope that Ford does what they feel is the right thing and gives her statuette to the family so that they — especially Eddy’s mother, who is 84 — can enjoy her daughter’s achievement.

There are rumors of Sonya Eddy being estranged from some family members at the time of her death. However, Eddy’s brother says that the two were working on fixing their dynamic before she passed.

Fans of the late actress can rest assured, however, that her Daytime Emmy is safe. “Consistent with the Trademark Policy engraved on the base of each statuette,” a rep for the Daytime Emmys tells Soap Hub, “NATAS has made arrangements with the producers of General Hospital for the Academy’s safekeeping of Ms. Eddy’s statuette in her memory.”
