Can it be said that Lulu and Maxie are the Lucy and Ethel of General Hospital? Perhaps in the past, but because Lulu Spencer had been in a coma for four years after an explosion that killed several people, and the fact that she’s trying to find her missing daughter Charlotte, the comedic elements of their friendship are on hold for the moment. Alexa Havins recently discussed Lulu’s new dynamic with Kirsten Storms’ Maxie, and the friends have a long road ahead of them.
Maxie finally caught up with Lulu recently, saying, “There you are! Were you ever gonna call me?” The two hugged, and Carly (Laura Wright) let them hang out in her office to catch up. Havins explained to Soap Opera Digest that the two couldn’t just go back to the way they were because “This first beat of them seeing each other and being together is so much more about, ‘So much has changed [since Lulu went into her coma]. Things have moved on. Things are different.’ ”
As Lulu’s excuse for not seeking Maxie out right away was because she needed to find her daughter, Havins reiterated that Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez) is Lulu’s priority. Admitting that this current storyline is darker than usual for Maxie and Lulu, Havins emphasized, “I didn’t want it to be like all of a sudden, Lulu was a giddy teenager. Things are heavier. There’s a lot at stake.” (Revisit the time Lulu was mortified when Maxie interfered in her love life.)

“I knew who Kirsten was before [joining the show], and I’m so excited to work with her,” Havins eagerly stated, explaining that she can’t wait to get into some good stories with Storms. They both love the comedy that the two can bring to the canvas, but “It’s just not quite right yet [for the characters, given Lulu’s current frame of mind].”
Havins is most looking forward to further exploring Lulu and Maxie’s friendship, especially “The nonsense they’ve gotten into.” Much like her late father, Luke (Anthony Geary), Lulu is not one to sit around feeling sorry for all the time they lost, and Havins feels that Lulu is a woman of action, immediately jumping in to find Charlotte. Once that’s done, we’ll be able to enjoy watching Lulu and Maxie truly reconnect and get back to their shenanigans.
