It’s been a long time since General Hospital’s Leslie Charleson has been seen in Port Charles for more than a few scenes. Viewers have worried about the GH veteran’s health in recent years, and now that Steve Burton is back on the canvas, he’s addressed his on-screen mom’s absence.
During the live Daily Drama podcast on May 23, 2024, hosted by GH’s Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson, Burton decided to shed light on the missing Monica (Leslie Charleson). “I was just going to say about Leslie Charleson and Monica,” he began after noticing questions about her from their listeners. “Someone asked if Jason (Steve Burton) and Monica will have scenes.”
Burton went on to answer the question by saying, “She’s on the mend. She’s doing better.” He noted he wasn’t sure what had been made public about Charleson’s absence, thought several reports say the actress has endured injuries from several falls in recent years. “I’m not going to say anything, just to be respectful of her, because I love her so much.” He concluded with, “Hopefully she’ll be back and I’ll get some scenes with Mom.”
Monica is often said to be away at a medical conference or recovering from short illnesses. Charleson was last seen on screen in December 2023, appearing in scenes with Jane Elliot and Michael Easy after having been off the show for nearly two years.
The latest mentions of Monica came due to Jason’s return. When Jason was arrested, he was given a note from his mother, a scene that stirred up real-life emotions for Burton. Monica was later said to be recovering from a sickness and asked Jason to take her place at Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn’s (Amanda Setton) wedding.
