For a few weeks, Sonny has seemed a hair calmer, cooler, and collected despite taking tampered meds. To be fair, he had his mind on other things like Natalia’s leaked audio, kicking Ava to the curb, and gathering allies for the upcoming custody trial. But now the case of the tampered meds is on a collision course with the trial. And it all begins with Ms. Ava Jerome.
Mind the Meds
Thanks to Valentin (James Patrick Stuart — gets a stark reminder), Sonny (Maurice Benard) has been taking tampered meds for months and months. His erratic behavior has resulted in him taking his out-of-control behavior out on Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) and Dex Heller (Evan Hofter). Also, he’s shut most of his family and friends out of his life.
The one person other than Valentin and Brennan (Charles Mesure) to know about these placebo bipolar pills is Ava (Maura West). And now she’s going to make her knowledge work for her. Due to the all-important lawyer-client privilege, she and Scott (Kin Shriner) will take advantage of Sonny’s vulnerability when he testifies against Ava having any sort of custody of her child.
The frustrating thing is that although Sonny lives on an island of his own making, several people have questioned whether Sonny is taking his medication. The latest is Michael (Chad Duell), who didn’t just question his dad’s partaking of the pills. He wanted to know if they were even working. Which they’re not. But the plan is for Ava and Scott to needle Sonny when he’s up on the stand. They think if they go after him full throttle for long enough, he will no doubt explode in front of the courtroom and, ultimately, the world. Then, the judge will have no choice but to award full custody to Ava.
However, will Sonny even last that long? Did you see him today? Gone is the cool, calm, collected persona. This guy that erupted all over Michael is fraying at the edges. The weekly promo has him acting out in anger. And then there’s Agent Cates (Adam J. Harrington), whose vendetta against Sonny runs even deeper than we first thought. His anger at Sonny is a bit over the top, but as he puts the screws to his nemesis, then that will cause a domino effect. Carly (Laura Wright) and Jason (Steve Burton) will close in on Sonny to protect him the only way they can.
All of this external turmoil and trouble will cause Sonny to take a turn at some point. And then anybody in the vicinity needs to step back as he explodes.
There’s a positive side to all this medication madness. Creating this plan to exploit Sonny’s spiraling using his messed-with-meds means that GH is finally furthering this story, which is greatly needed. At times, it’s been rough to see Sonny so affected, especially on this long-term basis.
