The walls are closing in on General Hospital’s Sonny as he loses friends by the minute.
Poor Sonny (Maurice Benard) is starting to become unhinged as he loses friends left and right. Dex (Evan Hofer), although initially tasked with taking Sonny down, had grown to become a trusted lieutenant for the don, and was later ordered to protect him.
But when he lost his booty call, Josslyn (Eden McCoy) — after revealing he almost killed Cyrus (Jeff Kober) on Sonny’s orders — he did a complete 180 and went and told police commissioner Anna (Finola Hughes) all about Sonny’s criminal organization! After we stopped yelling at Dex through the TV screen, we were disappointed because it looked like they were poised to be the next Sonny and Jason (Steve Burton). (Learn more about Dex’s situation.)
But the startling revelation that Dex had infiltrated his organization forced Sonny to cut all ties just short of executing him. Upon learning that Jason was not dead but had been working as an FBI informant, Sonny kicked him to the curb also. Not only has he pushed people away, but two of his closest friends have also changed their opinions about him.
Anna and Sonny, although on opposite sides of the law, had a mutual respect for each other. So much so that they even found solace in dumping their trauma on one another. But once Dex blabbed about Sonny’s not-really-secret-secrets, hearing it out loud made Anna rethink her friendship with him, changing her tune and now regarding him as a common criminal.
On the April 16 episode, one of his oldest friends, Laura (Genie Francis), also decided she didn’t much like what Sonny’s 9-to-5 job was. What gives? Why are his besties suddenly turning against him? Anna had a love affair with mobster Duke (Ian Buchanan), and Laura was head over heels in love with Luke (Anthony Geary), who was not only originally a mobster but also a conman. Both had turned a blind eye to Sonny’s business for decades, and now they’re suddenly having a crisis of conscience.
Anna and Laura seem to have forgotten that Sonny is essential to maintaining order in Port Charles. His policy of “no drugs, no prostitution” has prevented the town from turning into Gotham City. If Sonny’s imprisoned or worse, it would leave a vacuum that’s ripe for the picking for far more evil mobsters, or even Pikeman, who could turn the place into a war zone. Sonny’s nothing but loyal to those he loves, and he protects Port Charles. (Check out what could happen if Pikeman takes Sonny’s territory.)
Now he’s pretty much got Ava (Maura West) as his only ally, and with friends like her, who needs enemies?
