General Hospital‘s Drew went from good to bad seemingly overnight. The reason for this drastic change has finally been revealed.

Key Takeaways

  • GH’s head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten, explained why Drew suddenly became a villain.
  • The Quartermaines needed a black sheep.
  • Drew fit the role as a newcomer.
  • His affair with Willow came out of his need to be the hero.

Nice Drew Became Evil Drew

Drew (Cameron Mathison) was sent to Pentonville for insider trading. He entered as a great guy who took the fall for Carly (Laura Wright), but exited as an evil villain. In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, GH’s head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten, revealed the reason behind the personality shift.

Historically, the Quartermaine family had always thrived on conflict, and the writers wanted to recapture that with the present Qs. “I think that the family had lost that element, especially as Tracy had stepped up to really become the pinnacle, the head of the family,” explained Chris Van Etten.

Drew didn’t know he was a Quartermaine until 2017, which made him a likely candidate for the black sheep. Van Etten said, “Drew, to me, seemed positioned best, as a newcomer to the family and as a relative outsider within it — and with a really blank slate of a past — to step into the role as an antagonist, or an adversary from within.”

“The Quartermaines needed an A.J.,” Elizabeth Korte added. “They needed an Alan. And Drew was ideally positioned.”

Drew and Willow

It all began when Drew had an affair with his nephew Michael’s (Rory Gibson) wife, Willow (Katelyn MacMullen). The change seemed drastic, but Korte feels that his downfall “arose out of intrinsic character traits.”

Drew liked to be the hero, and that was what he was to Willow. The Quartermaines hated him for it. Willow eventually realized who Drew really was, which led her to shoot him and then drug him. Drew, meanwhile, isn’t changing back to a nice guy anytime soon. Evil Drew is here to stay.
