Brennan is more than just a WSB station chief on General Hospital. He’s also a career spy for the Bureau. In his line of work, secrets and lies are the tools of the trade. Living in the shadows and making the world safer is his goal, and he even saw skills in Josslyn that screamed ‘spy,’ recently recruiting her as an agent. Simultaneously, he’s wooing her mother, Carly. Chris McKenna recently opened up about the darkness that comes with being a spy and how it will affect his potential romance.
Brennan’s Darkness Is From Within
Although he seemed like a villain initially, Brennan changed things around and can be counted as one of the good guys. He helped rescue Anna (Finola Hughes), Jason (Steve Burton), Lucky (Jonathan Jackson), and Holly (Emma Samms) from certain death at the hands of Sidwell (Carlo Rota). Although on the side of good, Brennan can be ruthless in his tactics, Carly (Laura Wright) has managed to stir something in his heart.
McKenna explained to Soap Opera Digest that in the past, he’d played characters who were agents for government departments like the DEA, FBI, and CIA and was guided by technical advisors. He elaborated, “I’ve worked with CIA operatives. So, you know, when I’m approaching this role, [my take is that] Jack has been in the WSB for decades, which means he’s got darkness in him.”

He Has Scars on His Soul
McKenna further explained the darkness as a result of “terrible things” Brennan has most likely had to do in his line of work, giving him, “Scars on his soul.” But that is what intrigues him about a Brennan and Carly romance because this person who’s been able to compartmentalize their emotions now feels he must open that door and let his feelings out.

“And that’s what makes the stakes so high,” he remarked, adding, “and what makes the romance so much fun and so delicious, because if someone can get through that and get to his heart, then he’s in for the fight of his life!” He certainly is, especially if Carly finds out that he turned her daughter into a super spy. That puts their potential romance in jeopardy and is what makes it fun and interesting for the actor.
