David Gail, known to General Hospital fans for his portrayal of Dr. Joe Scanlon on GH spinoff Port Charles, has died. He was 58 years old.
Gail’s sister, Katie Colmenares, shared the heartbreaking news of her brother’s passing along with a photograph of the two embracing. “There’s barely been even a day in my life when you were not with me by my side always my wingman,” Colmenares wrote, “always my best friend ready to face anything and anyone w me the bears will never be the same but I will hold you so tight every day in my heart you gorgeous loving amazing fierce human being missing you every second of every day forever there will never be another.”
“David was a kind human. Someone I wish I spoke to more,” shared film director David Ferriero. “He was filled of life and incredible stories. I am grateful I got to know. I am so saddened for your loss, and the world’s loss. He was a gift to us all.”
“We loved David so much. He was one of the good guys in life,” posted Sheri Sussman of Spiral Gate Productions. ” So sending love to you and your family and am heartbroken he was the most loyal, supportive friend. I miss him already. “
“Beautiful words about David,” posted Pamela AKA Sporty Speaks in the comments section. “Sorry for your loss. You had a great brother. He was always full of fun, laughs & love. Will cherish my friendship with him. Sending Love to your family!”
No cause of death has been given. Gail succeeded Michael Dietz in the role of Joe Scanlon, a caring doctor at Genera Hospital. The late Jay Pickett played Joe’s brother, Frank Scanlon. Joe was an earnest doctor, who broke up with his girlfriend Karen (Marie Wilson) after being framed as a sex addict. Joe was cleared; he and Karen became friends but he left town before they became romantically involved again. Joe was one the show’s original GH interns who debuted on Port Charles. Many of the original seven young doctors met fateful ends but not Joe.
Port Charles original cast members Jon Lindstrom (Kevin, GH) and Kin Shriner (Scotty) posted tributes to Gail. “So saddened to learn of the passing of my former cast mate David Gail,” Lindstrom wrote on Instagram. “He was a good guy, a pleasure to be around, and I always thought he was a real talent. Sincere condolences to all his loved ones. Rest in Peace. Flight of Angels.”
Shriner wrote: “RIP to my old pal David Gail, he was fun to be around, we went to the Bahamas diving, he was a good guy !
Gail’s other credits include Robin’s Hoods, Savannah (as Dean Collins), ER, and JAG. He also played Stuart Carson opposite Shannen Doherty’s Brenda on Beverly Hills, 90210. The actor ‘s last listed credit was a video game in 2019 titled Blacksad: Under the Skin. Soap Hub sends sincere condolences to Gail’s loved ones, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
