No Excuse For Lucky’s Excuses On General Hospital

The closest General Hospital‘s Lucky and Elizabeth came to a reunion was when the concussed (he didn’t need Liz to diagnose that) Lucky hallucinated his ex-wife, the love of his life, as being in the prison cell with him, talking to him. Lucky babbled apologies to Liz about abandoning his family, how he couldn’t face her disappointment when he inevitably failed her and their boys. Since this was supposed to be a sincere peek into Lucky’s troubled psyche, we’re here to tell him that his excuses…are inexcusable.

Father of the Year

Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) kept apologizing for running out on Aiden (Tristan Riggs), and what a terrible father he is. This is true. Lucky has been a terrible father to Aiden.

But, here’s the irony: Lucky was a terrific father to Cameron (William Lipton) and Jake (Hudson West). He knew Cam wasn’t his from the start, but he loved the boy as if he were. Lucky knew Jake wasn’t his but Jason’s (Steve Burton) when he went to find the presumed dead boy. When he returned Jake to Elizabeth (Rebecca Hearbst), Lucky called him “our son.”

So where is this fear of being a terrible dad to Aiden coming from? Why wouldn’t he be as good of a father to his biological child as he was to the two boys he knew weren’t his — but fiercely loved, anyway?

Sins of the Fathers

Lucky told Liz he couldn’t face not being her hero any longer. It’s true that when the pair first fell in love, Lucky had stood by and supported Liz after she was raped. He was her hero. But that was over 25 years ago.

Lucky had fallen off his pedestal lots of time since then — drug addiction, anyone? Affair with Maxie (Kirsten Storms) — and Liz still loved him anyway. If that shouldn’t have been enough to prove how off-the-mark Lucky was, then how about the story of his own dad? Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) was Port Charles’ — and Lucky’s — hero. Until he wasn’t anymore. But Lucky still loved Luke. Even after his adored father ran over and “killed” Lucky’s son, Jake. Lucky knows that dads who stumble are still loved. Why wouldn’t that apply to him, too?
