Fans of General Hospital star Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Days of our Lives alum Patrick Muldoon (ex-Austin) are in for a treat as the two daytime heartthrobs are set to star in a brand new feature film.
Titled The Legitimate Wise Guy, the project, a fact-based tale hailing from the mind of veteran writer/producer Nicholas Celozzi, finds a wide-eyed innocent with dreams of becoming a Hollywood megastar falling under the sway of Anthony “Tony the Ant” Spilotro, a much-feared enforcer formerly employed by notorious mobster Al Capone.
Benard, who took to Twitter to praise the “great script,” will portray Michael Spilotro, Anthony’s brother, while Muldoon is poised to play Adam Knight. Additionally, the film stars Harvey Keitel (Bad Lieutenant), Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood), and Ruby Rose (Batwoman).
The Legitimate Wise Guy will be directed by George Gallo, and executive produced by Michael Sportelli and Freddy Braidy. Production is scheduled to begin in Spring 2021.
The Spilotro brothers and their exploits formerly served as inspiration for the characters Nicholas “Nicky” Santoro and Dominick “Dom” Santoro in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 crime epic Casino.
This will mark Benard’s second crack at playing a real-life made man, following his turn as John Gotti, the head of the Gambino crime racket, in the Lifetime original film Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter (2019).
Of course, fans of General Hospital know Benard for his work as benevolent mobster Sonny Corinthos, a role he has helmed since August 13, 1993.
Though Sonny is usually consumed with the day-to-day runnings of his upstate New York territory and the concerns of his large brood, a recent storyline dictated bout of amnesia has seen the character adjust to a new life as a simple barman named Mike.
As for Muldoon, Austin hasn’t appeared in Salem for a while but when he has, he’s been played by Austin Peck. That could be because Muldoon has been too busy making feature films. He’s recently been seen in The Comeback Trail, also helmed by Gallo, and starring Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, and Morgan Freeman and in which Muldoon also executive produced.
