Matt Cohen played Griffin Munro on General Hospital and while his appearance left fans swooning, he got extremely deep and personal, showing his bravery, during his time with Maurice Benard on his video podcast series, State Of Mind.
It was a needed reunion between these two, as this was shot soon after the loss of Tyler Christopher (ex-Nikolas) and both were still reeling. Benard introduced the segment by saying the two got in the boxing ring and it was the first time since the pandemic for the older actor, and he so appreciated it.
It was surprising that a quote from Shia LaBeouf during a podcast appearance was what led Cohen down this latest path he is on. LaBeouf was asked about the purpose of life, and Cohen shared his answer — “The purpose of life is to figure out what you’re good at, and then figure out how to help people with that.” He heard that three months ago and it changed his life. For Cohen that meant returning to boxing, which for him was about “mental health and mental wealth.” This caused him to reach out to Benard for State Of Mind and it definitely got the two to dig deeper into why this is so true for them.
They spoke about fathers, the trouble Cohen felt working on GH, and the dark places inside of him that made him understand suicide — and he admitted if he didn’t have a family, he may have allowed that darkness to win. They spoke of the importance of talking about it — otherwise, you end up trapped in your own mind. Everyone is battling stuff and by sharing it, you have a better chance at helping your mind.
Having worked on Entertainment Tonight, the actor/show spoke about how some of the biggest names in the biz were the kindest ones. He gave a shoutout to folks like Ryan Seacrest and The Rock, explaining what they did that earned his respect and admiration. He spoke about how the show groomed him to do it but that his heart is more in long-form interviews — with his desire to dig deeper. Due to that, Benard asked him to turn the tables and interview him — you won’t want to miss that. Cohen then asked to dedicate it to their fallen friends, Billy Miller and Tyler Christopher, whom they discussed during the almost hour-long talk. You can watch the entire episode here.
