Why Leslie Charleson Should Make One Last General Hospital Return

As the Quartermaine Mansion gets fuller and fuller on General Hospital, here’s why Leslie Charleson should bring Monica back to Port Charles one last time.

Where Is Monica?

Since Charleson’s debut as Monica in 1977, she became the longest-running actor on GH, playing the role for 46 years. Despite several leaves since 2018 due to falls and undisclosed health challenges, Charleson was last seen in Port Charles in December 2023 when Monica reunited with Tracy (Jane Elliot) at GH to discuss Finn’s (ex-Michael Easton) malpractice lawsuit.

Since Charleson’s health kept her from appearing on GH, Monica would often be said to either be ill or traveling for medical conferences. She’s almost always mentioned by her other family members at the mansion (that Alan (ex-Stuart Damon) left her!), but hasn’t been on screen in nearly a year.

One Last Hoorah?

While a source close to Charleson recently revealed a GH return is unlikely, if the actress was going to reprise the role to say a final goodbye to Monica, now is the perfect time for one reason: Jason (Steve Burton).

When Jason returned to Port Charles earlier this year and quickly found himself in trouble with the PCPD, he received a letter from his mother that was equally heartwarming and heartbreaking for both Burton and his character. The actor spoke about the emotional scene on his podcast Daily Drama, noting that he hoped for his on-screen mom’s return.

Things have gotten even twistier in Jason’s life since Sam’s (ex-Kelly Monaco) death has left Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) with unknown living arrangements, but with Jason’s latest decision to move back into the Quartermaine Mansion – a house he has not lived in since his 1995 accident left him with memory loss that sent him straight to the mob – now is the perfect time for Monica to show up and welcome her son home.
