She’s been playing Jackie Templeton on General Hospital since October, but actress Kim Delaney had a long and distinguished career before she took on the role of the intrepid reporter originated in the 1980s by future film star Demi Moore. And thanks to Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson’s podcast, Delaney is getting the chance to relive her film and TV trajectory.
Right off the bat, GH co-stars Burton, who plays Jason, and Anderson, who plays Spinelli, the hosts of the That’s Awesome! podcast, let you in on a little secret: Kim Delaney is no stranger to daytime. In fact, she’s no stranger to television in general, or to feature films – facts supported by her extensive resume on IMDb.
But surprise, surprise, Delaney didn’t feel destined for a life in front of the camera. In fact, had her father had his way, she’d have been a court reporter. But a chance encounter with a talent scout led to a stint as a model, and modeling eventually led Delaney to her first professional gig – playing virginal Jenny Gardner on ABC’s All My Children.
But after three years, Delaney called it quits. As she explains to the enraptured gentlemen, “I was young. I wanted to try other stuff.”
And that other stuff was exactly what the trio discussed during their 35-plus minute chit chat. In the process, there were some illusions shattered (despite all appearances to the contrary, NYPD Blue was primarily shot on location in Los Angeles) and some interesting factoids revealed – turns out, it was Delaney who chose the eponymous setting of her mid-aughts legal drama.
Burton made sure to mention one of his favorite shows on which Delaney guest-starred – The O.C. – and everyone had a good laugh upon remembering the Chuck Norris picture Delta Force, in which Delaney played a nun!
The actress shared who and what filled her hours during the lean times – spoiler alert: it’s her friends and a pilates session…or two – and she even hazarded a guess as to how she’s managed to survive so long in the cut-throat world of acting.
According to the Primetime Emmy winner, it comes down to “faith in what I do. No, no, love for what I do,” and also the relationships that forge with those she works with…. especially the cameramen. As she, and the men are quick to point out, “If you’re not helping them out, they will not be your friends!”
