General Hospital’s Josh Kelly recently revealed a part of his past that may surprise his newfound GH fans.
While talking with co-star Maurice Benard (Sonny) on the latest episode of State of Mind, Kelly (Cody) delved into what he did before becoming an actor. “I joined the army so I could do action movies,” he admitted, becoming the first State of Mind guest to open up about war after explaining how he signed up at 17 and joined at 18. “And I didn’t know 9/11 was going to happen.”
The actor recalled that he was one of the first ones in Afghanistan, and that the number one, Chris Stonecipher, died instead of Kelly, who was number two. “I got to name my character in Transformers 3 after him, which was pretty cool,” he said, remembering his character named Stone.
Kelly also revealed what he thought the worst part of the war was. “Before war,” he revealed, noting the way they had to make goodbye letters and videos. “I’m so grateful that I was able to experience the military before war, during war, and then after.”
Being a mental health podcast, Benard, who recently went solo on his podcast to discuss his triumphant year, asked his co-star about the aftermath of war and battling PTSD. “You can’t experience those things without being affected,” he shared. “The way that I’ve dealt with everything, mostly, is humor.”
Kelly also revealed how his acting career helped him through the after-effects of war. “I’m really grateful that I dove into acting as soon as I got out,” he told Benard. “It’s a good excuse to feel.” Find out what Kelly’s GH character, Cody, has been up to lately in Port Charles.
When Kelly shared what he calls “a great story” about parachuting into Iraq, it hinted back to Cody’s arrival to Port Charles when he parachuted into the Metro Court pool, almost drowning Britt (ex-Kelly Thiebaud).
