On General Hospital, Sonny has been weakened because Ava turned his bipolar medication into placebos. At this vulnerable stage, and with nearly everyone telling him what a horrible person he is, he could very well spiral out of control and land in jail or worse.
We’ve been waiting for the moment when Sonny (Maurice Benard) finally loses his cool and goes ballistic, and that time may be at hand. Ever since we learned that Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) had paid off Sonny’s pharmacist to lower the dosage of his bipolar meds, and then Ava (Maura West) got wind of it and made the guy turn them into placebos, we knew it would only be a matter of time before he went off the rails.
The setup seemed obvious: in their custody fight over Avery (Ava and Grace Scarola) Ava instructed her attorney, Scotty (Kin Shriner), to push Sonny’s buttons in court, and we expected to see him explode on the witness stand. But that story took a shocking and unexpected sharp left turn when Kristina (Kate Mansi) fell out of Ava’s hotel room window into the pool and lost her baby. (Find out about the Scarola Twins’ major milestone.)
Now Ava’s being questioned by the police, and it looks like there are no chances of her winning the custody fight. When Sonny wanted to see Kristina in the hospital, her sister Molly (Kristen Vaganos) gave him a verbal thrashing, blaming him for the death of the baby that Kristina had been carrying as a surrogate.
Hanging his head down and walking away in a particularly sad scene, Sonny went off and reflected on all the people who recently accused him of being a criminal and an overall bad person. Ordinarily, when a character ruminates about such things, it becomes a turning point where they decide to turn their life around. However, that might not be the case here, considering he’s unknowingly off his medication.
Sonny closest friends including police commissioner Anna (Finola Hughes) and mayor Laura (Genie Francis) have turned their backs on him after realizing that, yes, he’s a mobster (duh!). But he’s also felt that everyone he knows has turned against him, even though people like Jason (Steve Burton) and Carly (Laura Wright) are truly on his side and have been trying to help him.
The placebos have clouded his judgment, and he’s pushed everyone in his life away. At the end of his reflection, the look in his eyes was that of sadness and desperation, and it’s very likely that he’ll blow up.
If that happens, it’s going to take the combined efforts of Jason, Carly, and perhaps a couple of other people to reel him in before he does something he’s going to regret—like fitting Ava with a pair of cement galoshes. Once a very cautious gangster who ensured that any charges against him never stuck, he’s been making blatant public mistakes, such as beating the snot out of Dex (Evan Hofer) at a wedding.
His rogue’s gallery currently consists of Scotty, Ava, and Agent Cates (Adam J. Harrington). With his scheming half-brother, Ric (Rick Hearst), coming back to Port Charles, they might have a chance of striking Sonny when he’s so vulnerable. Hopefully, Jason and Carly can contain him in time to prevent us from losing our favorite racketeer!
