Susan Lucci reunited with some All My Children and other soap opera pals when she came to Los Angeles last week to accept her Lifetime Achievement Daytime Emmy. She chatted with Soap Hub on the pre-show red carpet and also backstage afterward about a few topics. We couldn’t help but ask her if she’s making a return to daytime drama.

Susan Lucci: All Her Soaps

Lucci tells Soap Hub that she was happy to be reunited with former AMC co-stars Cameron Mathison (Drew, General Hospital; ex-Ryan, AMC) and TV daughter Eden Riegel (ex-Bianca). The actress says that her trip to the West Coast went as “smooth as glass.” Lucci passed the time on the flight by watching a few classic films she’d never seen, including Adam’s Rib, which starred Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as married lawyers who squared off in the courtroom. The story addressed equality among the sexes.

“I must be the only person in the world who hadn’t seen it yet,” Lucci said. “I was struck by the performances, how good the writing was. We all think we’re so modern now? The content! I want to do something with that kind of writing.”

This time, Lucci knew in advance she’d be leaving the ceremony with an Emmy — since she was getting the Lifetime Achievement Award. The actress, who took home her first gold statuette for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1999 for playing Erica Kane, shares that she didn’t even hear her name when presenter Shemar Moore (ex-Malcolm, Young and the Restless) announced that “the streak is over!” on that fateful night.

“Shemar said he didn’t expect to see my name [on the card] — neither did I!” says Lucci with a laugh. “History had taught me I wasn’t going up on that stage.”

Lucci says she’s thrilled and honored to have her bookend Daytime Emmy but promises they’ll be close to each other. As for her favorite storylines, she shares that “I loved all the modeling stories. I’m 5’2″ on a good day! It was fun to be on location…[including] Lincoln Center and twirl in front of the fountains.”

The actress was present at the awards with many head writers and executive producers from soaps on Daytime Emmy night. She reveals that some, indeed, have reached out to her in the past about the possibility of coming onto one of their shows. “I’m very honored and flattered [by the interest],” says Lucci, who flashes a smile and says, “We’ll see.” Watch the interview below.
