At Sam’s funeral earlier this week, Dante stood up in front of Sam’s loved ones and said, “I’ve become a better man because of Sam. For loving her and being loved by her.” Well, the man who plays Dante agrees with this sentiment big time. General Hospital‘s Dominic Zamprogna sees Dante’s evolution because he had Sam by his side.
Maturity Blossomed
Sam’s (Kelly Monaco) relationship with Dante lasted for several years. They were never a flashy couple, and, at times, their connection felt effortless.
Together, they blended their families. Dante’s ex was comatose. Sam’s exes took turns being “dead,” disappeared off the face of the Earth, or deadbeat. So Dante, Sam, Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), Rocco (Finn Francis Carr), and Scout (Cosette Abinante) became a solid family. And they handled everything pretty well when Jason (Steve Burton) and Drew (Cameron Mathison) returned to town. And even when Drew was released from jail after his SEC stint at Pentonville.

Zamprogna’s thoughts on Sam and Dante are similar to those of his character. The actor recently told Soap Opera Digest that he thinks Dante “became more of a man with Sam.” And this happened because “when you’re getting older, and your kids are getting older, you’re thinking things a little differently,” he added.
As a result, “there was a whole element of the Sam/Dante relationship that was very mature,” Zamprogna explained. “They were different people together than they’d been with other people on the show.

This more mature, evolved state is exactly why Dante will miss Sam so much. Unfortunately, he will have to adjust to a life without the safe space each provided for the other. Zamprogna calls Dante’s relationship with Sam “life-altering” for his character. Since her death, Dante has been talking over and over again about how she saved his life. She rescued him from this dark pit of a place, and without her, he doesn’t know where he would be.
“Dante’s journey with her was him getting to coexist with someone who wasn’t Lulu,” Zamprogna explained. “It felt like this unspoken kind of maturity came out of [Sam and Dante being together].”
