Maurice Benard’s latest episode of his mental health podcast State of Mind left him calling his General Hospital co-star, Kristen Vaganos, “so lucky” for what many may find a surprising reason.
She’s So Lucky
Benard’s podcast – which he’s hosted for over four years – typically tackles mental health issues, delving into depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and so much more. And more often than not, the actor will be joined by a GH co-star or fellow daytime actor with a story to share regarding their own mental health. Most recently, the actor was joined by former co-star Sarah Joy Brown, who recounted an experience that “blew up her life.”
In Benard’s latest episode with Molly’s portrayer, Vaganos admitted, “I didn’t get that worst-case scenario. I am pretty even-keeled, I am pretty sane, for the most part.”
When Benard asked if anyone in Vaganos’ family struggled with mental health, she said she feels lucky. “I feel like I had something that becomes more and more rare.” The actress explained that her parents are still happily married, taught her and her sister good values, and admitted to wondering how she came out okay compared to others she knew.
“You said it yourself and I’ll say it again, you’re so lucky,” Benard told her when she finished.
An Interest
Although Vaganos doesn’t have first-hand experience with mental health struggles, she revealed her strong interest in learning about it. “I took so many psyche classes in school because I love just figuring out the weird responses we all have.”

“There’s so much you’ve got to relearn and reteach yourself when you’ve grown up with your nervous system getting used to and learning trigger responses and traumas and levels,” she continued.
