The mother of all bombshells occurred on the December 12 episode of General Hospital. Tracy, irritated that everyone was enjoying the PCU football game instead of the Quartermaine Christmas party, tried stopping the stream from Michael’s phone. She inadvertently played the tawdry nanny cam video of Drew and Willow making whoopee. Everyone was horrified, and the shockwaves sent out will be irreversible. Cameron Mathison spoke out about Drew’s point of view and his own reaction to the surprising story.
“Obviously, people are in shock,” Mathison told TV Insider. “The Quartermaines love it because they’re already anti-Drew. Everybody else is mortified. It gets real ugly, real fast, understandably. It feels like everything is unraveling.” He stated that, at first, he was shocked and confused by the direction the writers were going with Drew. And he had to speak to the higher-ups to have it explained to him and eventually understand where they were going with it.
For a while now, Drew’s dark side has been emerging, especially illustrated by his scheme to betray Curtis (Donnell Turner) and give the Aurora CEO position to Michael (Chad Duell). Having witnessed the video of Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) sleeping with Drew, Michael also taps into his own dark side to help Curtis take Drew down. The affair was larger than Mathison envisioned. “It’s way bigger and wilder and more disruptive than I ever could have imagined, which I say in an exciting way.”
Because Drew had been kidnapped by villains for a couple of years, from 2019 to 2021, and then went to prison for a while to protect Carly from SEC charges of insider trading, Drew has been an outcast. But connecting with Willow has helped assuage his rage. Mathison explained, “Ultimately, you’ll see as the story develops, there’s more of [Drew being outcast], and I think he’s just really latching on to Willow, who’s also a little bit of an outsider in a sense.” (Find out more about the insider trading debacle.)
But thinking positively, the actor stated that the affair would lead to something good. “I think it’s the making of, potentially, a really beautiful love story. I really do.” While affairs are always messy, and despite Mathison admitting that Drew’s “Not thinking super clearly in all ways,” he remains optimistic that the outcome will be good for the show and win over fans who were initially turned off by the affair.
