General Hospital’s Elizabeth Webber and Ric Lansing have had a tumultuous relationship over the years. With Rick Hearst’s recent reprisal of the sleazy lawyer, they may just rekindle their toxic romance. Let’s take a look at their history together.
In 2002, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and Ric met and found a mutual attraction. However, Ric had a couple of things working against him: he was actively pursuing a vendetta against his half-brother Sonny (Maurice Benard) — who he blamed for causing their mother to abandon him — and he was secretly having an affair with mobster Faith Roscoe (Cynthia Preston) although he really loved Liz.
Faith didn’t want to share Ric with her, so she put a snake in her art studio, where Liz got bitten and landed in the hospital. Fortunately, she survived and learned she was pregnant with Ric’s baby. They ended up getting married in 2003, but the vindictive mobstress had other plans for Liz and shoved her down a flight of stairs. As a result, Liz miscarried, and she and Ric were devastated.

No one knew Faith did it, and Ric naturally assumed it was Sonny’s work. In retaliation, he kidnapped his then-sister-in-law, Carly (Laura Wright), who was also pregnant. He locked her in a secret panic room in his house, illustrating what a dastardly person he truly was, especially because he wanted to steal the baby for him and Liz to raise.
One day, she stumbled across the switch that opened the panic room’s door and was horrified to see Carly chained up! But before she could notify the authorities, her birth control pills caused an embolism, and she passed out. Ric found her and got her to the hospital, but when she woke up, she immediately told the police about Ric’s nefarious deed. However, they didn’t find Carly when they investigated because Lorenzo (Ted King) had uncovered Ric’s secret and moved Carly to another location.
Despite his pleas that he really did love her, Liz left their marriage and filed for divorce.

Liz and Jason (Steve Burton) had tried for years to get a relationship going, but it never worked out, yet they remained friends. When his sister, Emily (Natalia Livingston), was dealing with cancer, Liz consoled him, but his then-wife Courtney (Alicia Leigh Willis) got jealous because they were getting closer. She had been hooked on painkillers, and at one point, she was driving while high and ran over Liz by accident, causing her to go blind. Ric, of course, was there to support his ex-wife and tried hard to woo her back.
To distance herself from Ric, Liz (who regained her sight) found herself at a bar where she met Zander (Chad Brannon), and the two subsequently had a one-night stand that rendered her pregnant. She and Ric had been moving closer once more and were married by the end of the year. At first, they were planning to conceal the baby’s paternity, so they decided to tell Zander. He had been enmeshed in Faith’s organization, allowing the couple to raise the child. Zander would later go off the rails and was shot dead by the police.
Ric’s obsession with getting revenge on Sonny worsened, and it got to the point where Liz couldn’t take it anymore, so in 2004, they divorced yet again. Fast-forward to 2014, when Ric returned after having left Port Charles for some time and had secretly allied himself with the Jerome crime family. He and Liz started to see each other again, but she hit the brakes on their relationship when his criminal activities came to light.
Elizabeth later started to fall for Jake Doe (then Billy Miller), believing he was really Jason, and lied about his identity. To separate the two, Ric hired Hayden (Rebecca Budig) to pretend she and Jake were married. That secret eventually came out; Liz had had enough of Ric by this point.
In 2016, Ric tried again to get Liz back when he realized she and Franco (Roger Howarth) were starting to connect. But she immediately stopped it, telling him that despite Franco having been a former serial killer, he was at least honest about it. But Ric had never been honest with her, so she kicked him to the curb.
Now, Ric is back, and there are some sparks between him and Liz. He even talked her into going out for an ice cream. One would hope that with the years of experience she has with bad relationships, and in particular, Ric and Liz would stop things before they got too far, or history would end up repeating itself, and she’d have another failed relationship in her repertoire.
