Like many works of fiction, soaps tend to play fast and loose with reality. Kids are often aged much faster than in real life, like many of the youngsters in General Hospital’s recent teen scene which is gaining momentum. Since it was revealed that Brook Lynn not only got pregnant as a teen and gave the child up for adoption but also Dante is the father, fans have been pondering the logistics of their ages. Now, Amanda Setton has stepped up to give her two cents on whether or not the Dante/Brook Lynn timeline works.
Revisionist History
Setton had a chat with Soap Opera Digest, and the topic of Brook Lynn and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) hooking up in the past being contradictory to the existing show canon was brought up. When Cody (Josh Kelly) came to town and revealed that he and Dante had gone to camp together as kids, it seemed acceptable that this was part of Dante’s past. However, there were never any scenes where Cody and Brook Lynn acknowledged that she knew him back then. Moreover, it’s been revealed that Cody knew she was pregnant at that time and that Dante was the baby daddy.
Setton explained her rationale for this bit of continuity malleability. “I think in Port Charles, there’s always a tad of a suspension of disbelief. There has to be just a tad.” It’s the same kind of suspension of disbelief that viewers must employ when a child character is rapidly aged or SORAS’d. Or even with a recast like Charles Mesure leaving the role of Brennan and Chris McKenna taking over.

Age Is Actually an Issue
“I think the way Dom [Zamprogna, Dante] and I have reconciled it in our minds is that [our characters are] not exactly the same age; we may be two years apart or three years apart, or, you know, I was a freshman, he was a junior,” Setton explained, acknowledging that their ages went against what had already been illustrated in stories. There’s a six-year age difference between the actors in real life, so they probably wouldn’t have been together as teens. But this is a soap, after all.
Setton also acknowledged that knowing this part about her character’s past has helped her connect the dots in Brook Lynn’s life and explained her need to have a child. Now that Chase (Josh Swickard) apparently can’t father any children, the spotlight has turned to Brook Lynn’s past pregnancy and the revelation that Gio (Giovanni Mazza) is her and Dante’s son. It will be interesting to see how Chase deals with that once he learns the truth.
