Here’s How Sonny’s Heart Attack Should Have Happened On General Hospital

Sonny’s heart attack on the January 21, 2025, episode of General Hospital turned into a major missed opportunity.

Not-So-Heart-to-Heart

It had the perfect setup. Ava (Maura West) was blasting Sonny (Maurice Benard) for not telling her about the fire in his penthouse, understandably worried about Avery’s (Ava and Grace Scarola) safety. The stress took a visible toll on Sonny, who hid his wincing from a shouting Ava. As soon as she stormed out of his office, Sonny clutched his chest and collapsed to the floor, spilling his medication.

Long-time GH viewers may remember a similar storyline that had a much different outcome for the characters, and this scene would have been the best way to pay homage to the unforgettable scene. Back in 1980, when Tracy (Jane Elliot) found out that Edward (then played by David Lewis) planned to disinherit her, she watched as he had a heart attack, holding his heart medication hostage until he agreed to keep her in his will.

If Ava had witnessed Sonny’s heart attack and his fumbling with the medication, she easily could have pulled a Tracy and withheld the medication from him until he agreed to give her custody of Avery. The two are still in the middle of a custody battle, after all, and it certainly wouldn’t be the first time Ava kept Sonny from his medication.

But instead, Ava is once again not in the loop. And Natalia (Eva LaRue) will be the one who rushes to Sonny’s aid. Odds are she’ll get him admitted to GH, which means it’s only a matter of time until The Digitals Killer – aka Cyrus (Jeff Kober) – tries to claim him as his next victim.
