Here’s How General Hospital’s Cameron Mathison Deals With Drew Hate

General Hospital star Cameron Mathison received hate for his character’s controversial storyline. Drew embarked on a passionate relationship with Willow, which hasn’t been without its share of drama. The actor revealed how he’s dealt with the backlash he’s received, both online and off.

Tackling Haters

In an interview with Woman’s World, Mathison talked about how he tackles life’s challenging moments as his character gets major hate. Mathison sees struggles as an opportunity for growth. This is a time for him to dive deep and respond with love.

“The ways I do it involve going inward—not by numbing out or distracting myself, but through my meditation practice, my spiritual life, and trying to develop and utilize love and compassion for others,” Mathison explains.

This interview was done just days before the soap star lost his home to the Los Angeles wildfires. Mathison addressed the challenges he dealt with along the way, like his cancer diagnosis and the COVID pandemic. He would rather not “spiral down into excessive self-concern.” Rather, Mathison uses these tough times “to improve my patience, my acceptance, my compassion, my connectedness with others.”

Rooting For Drew and Willow

Despite the hate, Mathison loves Drew’s relationship with Willow (Katelyn MacMullen). He’s rooting for the couple. Mathison explained that this is a good thing for his alter-ego. He just had no idea how much others hated his character until he interacted with GH fans.

“I’ve never had people hate me so much,” Mathison exclaimed. “I went to Christmas Con, and almost everybody in line was livid at Drew. I’m trying to make smiley pictures with a Christmas tree in the background, and they’re throwing things at me.”

Still, Mathison feels confident about Drew’s future. He thinks he’s long overdue for a redemption arc. He’s also on Drew’s side about his scandalous relationship with Willow. “In soaps, sometimes love stories start in complete dysfunction, mistakes, and betrayal, and everybody freaks out… but then the couple comes together. It could be Drew and Willow against the world.”
