Tuesday’s episode of General Hospital ended with Carly receiving news that her beloved mother, Bobbie Spencer, had passed away. Now actress Laura Wright is sharing exactly how her alter-ego copes — or doesn’t — the eye-opening moment Carly shares with a former rival, and how ex-husband Sonny Corinthos proves to be the balm Ms. Spencer so desperately needs.

Laura Wright Talks Mournful Carly

In the immediate aftermath of learning that Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman) is dead, Carly heads for Kelly’s, the eatery that passed from mother to daughter — for the cost of a dollar. Explained Wright to Soap Opera Digest, “She wants to be [there] because it makes her feel close to her mother.”

Carly soon finds herself joined by Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), whose reminiscences give her more insight into just exactly who her mother was. “Carly and Elizabeth have a really true, honest moment because they’re coming together because of something so real,” offered Wright. “Carly hearing about her mom through Elizabeth and about how much her mom changed Elizabeth’s life is such a gift for Carly.”

But it’s Wright’s work opposite long-time leading man Maurice Benard (Sonny) that proved to be some of her favorite scenes. (See Benard’s discussion with Zeman on State Of Mind here.)

Recalls the actress, “There is a moment where Carly opens the door and Sonny’s standing there, and then he’s like, ‘I heard about Bobbie.’ I just stare at him and I’m saying nothing and he goes, ‘You know what, I’m gonna leave you alone.’ And then I say, ‘Sonny,’ and he stops and I run into his arms.”

And if that poignant moment hits you right in the feels, you have Wright to thank for it — the embrace was all her idea.

“He’s family. He is the deepest family that she has, now that her mother is gone,” she declares. “I said, ‘I would run into his arms, not like, “Let’s make out,” but like, ‘No one knows me better than you.’ So I just ran into his arms…And the intimacy of the rest of the scene was just incredible. We talked and laughed through our tears.”
