It was a fun walk down Memory Lane on Wednesday for Kin Shriner. General Hospital’s Scott Baldwin reminded everyone of that time he got to hang out with legendary film star, Dustin Hoffman.
Kin Shriner Lends A Helping Hand
The actor shared a throwback picture on his official Twitter account that showed him with the famed thespian when both were obviously younger. Along with the photo, he wrote, “Yes the Great Dustin Hoffman came to [General Hospital] to research for the movie ‘tootsie’ I was happy to help shed light on daytime tv !!”
Of course, he’s referencing the Oscar-nominated film from 1982, in which an out-of-work actor (Hoffman), desperate to find a job, ends up having to dress up as a woman in order to find one. He does — and it’s on a daytime soap that just so happens to be set in a hospital. Go figure! So what better place to do research than to visit a real soap set in a hospital — and that’s exactly what Hoffman and the film’s director, Sydney Pollack, did.
Granted, that wasn’t the only tie to the then-current General Hospital storyline there was for the film, which also starred Jessica Lange (who won the Oscar for her role) and Teri Garr. The climax of the film is the big reveal when Hoffman’s character, Michael Dorsey, in full drag as “Dorothy,” needs to reveal that he is indeed a man.
Legend has it that Hoffman studied the way “Sally” (Chris Morley) was revealed to be hitman Max Hedges during the Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Laura Webber Baldwin (Genie Francis) love-on-the-run story. Luke and Laura knew “Sally,” but she was really trying to kill them, and in a classic scene, fans were finally tipped off that Sally was simply a clever disguise that allowed Max to get close to the couple.
After this article ran, Shriner responded with a clarification. “Actually @Soap_Hub he came back to @GeneralHospital years later for another project and took me and few actors to lunch, now that was fun!” We can only imagine!
