Donnell Turner: A Filmmaker
Donnell Turner (Curtis Ashford) was very close to his mother Lorraine Sylvester and, when she passed away back in 2021, he wanted to honor her. In 2022, he was accepted into Los Angeles Film School where he majored in Digital Filmmaking. On November 1, 2023, Turner had a special update to share on social media.
“On Friday, October 27th I was blessed to realize a dream that had eluded me for over thirty years. I graduated from The Los Angeles Film School, Summa Cum Laude, with A Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Filmmaking! When I started my academic journey it was also to live up to Momma’s academic examples and share her love of learning. I can just hear her animated approval now; I know she is pleased. I wish I could have seen her face however, her presence was/is felt.”
He went on to give praise to his fellow classmates and gave a shout-out to a GH co-star for also reaching a higher education milestone. “Congratulations to all the 2023 graduates, and props to my ‘nephew’ and friend @tajhbellow for staying with it and earning the win. You did it sir! A special shout out to those who assisted in my journey and to those who were there to support me on this important day. To my core, I am Grateful beyond words, and I know Momma is proud of her baby boy.
“I thank you all in advance for your kind words, support, and well wishes,” Turner finished, adding on an inspirational note to readers. “Remember- Your direction is more important than your location, and It is NEVER too late to put your dreams into action! 👨🏽🎓🥳🙏🏾”
At a Zoom event back in August of 2023 for Coastal Entertainment, Turner described the process that he used to tackle film school which combined his acting skills with his athletic prowess. “I watch GH, to do homework,” he explained. “So, I get to study film just like an athlete would watch their game performance and try to make corrections. I have to make corrections so we can get better each day. That’s my philosophy.”
He went on to detail how much time he invested, between working at GH and studying, in keeping the dream alive and reaching his goal of graduating with honors. Congratulations, Donnell Turner. You made it!
