Nina Reeves, played by Cynthia Watros, is very grateful these days on General Hospital as she’s wed to Sonny, and for Michael (for now) keeping quiet about her role in the SEC call. Gratitude is a topic about which Watros has something to say. You can join her in a Zoom event this weekend to hear her thoughts on being thankful as the holiday season gets underway.
Cynthia Watros: Giving Thanks
Watros recently attended a GH fan gathering in Graceland, Elvis’s home, in Memphis, Tenn., and was thrilled to spend time with GH’s devoted fan base. “Talking to fans is always so amazing to me,” the Daytime Emmy-winner tells Soap Hub. She’s observed that fans “feel like they know you because you’re in their living rooms five days a week. They’ll tell you if they’re going through something. I find that touching.”
To that end, Watros wants to spend more time chatting with GH supporters this Sunday, November 5. The actress feels it’s more vital than ever for people to show kindness to each other, given how tumultuous the world is. What better time to connect and also show gratitude than November — Thanksgiving month!
Consider a New Approach
Why does Watros feel it’s important to express gratitude — even though it may not feel as if it’s always something easy to do? “I think people remember the negative,” she offers. “It’s something we do to feel safe. I think we have to practice how to ‘rewire’ our brains.”
Watros shares an example from her own life in which she learned how to reframe a frustrating situation into something more positive. (After all, even the Quartermaines seem to appreciate getting to eat pizza after they have an annual turkey snafu at Thanksgiving.) “I go to this gym, and recently, the lot that’s closest to the gym had filled up,” she recalls. “So, I had to drive to this other lot, which is quite a distance away.” At first, Watros was peeved that going to another lot would result in more of her time being sucked up. Negative thoughts started to creep into her mind.
“I switched it around and said to myself, ‘Cynthia, why don’t you just enjoy the walk?’ It was a beautiful day. I got to see beautiful trees,” she says. “It sounds corny, but I got to see things I hadn’t seen before — nothing huge, but these were things I hadn’t noticed before.”
Cynthia Watros: The Last Zoom
Not everyone will experience this particular dynamic. However, Watros says it could be used as a guide on how to handle other issues that come up in life. “If you make a slight shift, I’m telling you [you may feel differently],” she says. Being happy won’t result in feeling grateful, the actress says, but she feels that feeling gratitude for what you do have will inspire happiness.
“If you can go more into that framing, you can find the simplest of things [in life] to be happy about,” she suggests. “It’s hard to keep gratitude alive and in our hearts and minds all the time.” The actress says that the cliché about life being short is, alas, true. “If we can find a little bit of happiness along the way, we can find kindness for ourselves and others.”
