Followers of Cameron Mathison, who plays Drew on General Hospital, know that his best pal is his dog, Red. Sadly, the fan favorite is sharing news that Red is battling some health issues.
“As a cancer survivor, it’s so hard to see others receive that dreaded diagnosis,” Mathison shared on Instagram, followed by a hands-praying emoji. He went on to explain that his beloved Doberman dog, Red, isn’t doing too well. “Red was diagnosed with a Multiple Myeloma type Cancer diagnosis a few months ago😢. It’s inside his spine, and caused paralysis in his back legs.”
“The prognosis isn’t good, but with the help of [2 Hands 4 Paws Foundation] (thank you [Larissa Alexis Wohl]), we are doing our best to keep his quality of life the best we can for the time he has left,” Mathison adds. “Love you, Red…you’ve been so good to us for 11 years, and we are doing our best to show you how grateful we are❤️ #dogsofinstagram #cancersucks.”
The Instagram handle @2h4pfoundation stands for 2 Hands 4 Paws Foundation, a nonprofit group that gives the gift of mobility to special needs pets. Mathison’s daytime pals are sending messages of support during this challenging time. “You’re all so amazing😭 You got this, Red!!!❤️,” shared Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, The Young and the Restless), who played Annie on All My Children opposite Mathison’s Ryan. “Sending so much love to you and Red,” wrote Finola Hughes (Anna, GH), who also appeared as both Anna and her twin Alex on AMC.
Other GH pals, including Laura Wright (Carly), Tamara Braun (ex-Kim; Ava, Days of our Lives), and Wes Ramsey (ex-Peter), also shared their support with loving posts on Mathison’s account. Mathison’s wife Vanessa (who appeared on GH as Mia in 2022) wrote: “Red has the best daddy❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.”
Chris Gaida, writer/producer, and author of Arm Candy: A Celebrity Escorts Tales from the Red Carpet, shared an inspirational personal story about his own pet. “My dog had cancer, it was removed, but told she would only live to last October,” Gaida posted. “She is still alive, and the cancer seems to be gone. They have no idea what happened. Lots of love and medical attention sometimes can work!”
Soap Hub joins Mathison’s friends and supporters in wishing Red all the best. Check out the video below that the actor created in honor of Red. He set the footage, appropriately, to the Jack Johnson song “Better Together.”
