The holiday season is extra special when you’re a kid — even if you grow up to be a soap star. These General Hospital stars took a walk down Memory Lane to share what it was about their youth that they remember fondly to this day.
It was during a Coastal Entertainment Zoom event hosted by Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos), in which he had special guests Tabyana Ali (Trina Robinson), on-screen love interest Cynthia Watros (Nina Reeves), and off-screen jokester partner Kin Shriner (Scott Baldwin) in attendance. One participant, Allyson, asked about their favorite childhood holiday memory. Not everyone could pull up something idyllic from their childhood — but all were honest and from the heart.
“I think for me,” began Benard, “it was my father would always dress up as Santa Claus, and he’d have a scotch, and he’d have a straw, so I always knew it was him.” This caused many who were listening to laugh. “He’d try to fake everybody out. You know, I saw the straw, and I smelled the liquor, but he looked just like Santa Claus, which was amazing cause he was tall and he looked just like him. But he’d be drinking and drinking and drinking, it was amazing,” he said, smiling at the memory.
Ali was going to say ditto that story, which also got some laughs, but then she got real. “I think the first time I went to Denver with all of my family…there was my sister and her husband’s family and my mom…we all went and it was a fun time for us all going to Denver. We all stayed in this cabin, and it was the first time I saw snow, or at least crunchy, icy snow. We went to a basketball game, and we got to sit where all the cool people sit — those little private rooms — that was fun. I kind of wish I could go back in time and do it again.”
Shriner went next. “Getting up at midnight and coming down, because that was Christmas Eve, we were woken up…it was time to get up. I just remember Christmas Eve as that was the night of the year that you might come up with a couple of new presents — if you had it on Santa’s list.”
“To be honest,” began Watros, “I don’t know if we had any traditions. I guess putting up a tree…most years…I think that was what was most important for me when I had kids was to have at least one or two [traditions]. I think it’s nice to have traditions, something you can count on year after year, but I don’t know if I really had anything year after year.”
