Fans sure are enjoying seeing General Hospital’s Epiphany Johnson sing and flirt with Marshall Ashford as she also takes his advice to try to become a doctor. Meanwhile, Epiphany’s portrayer, Sonya Eddy, has joyful news of her own to celebrate.
That’s because she was born on June 17, 1967, in Concord, California, which means that this fan-favorite is turning 55 years old today! Upon graduating from UC Davis, Eddy launched her acting career by tackling multiple roles in the play Zora, Is My Name — a biographical play about the life of Zora Neale Hurston, penned by Ruby Dee (ex-Martha Frazier, Guiding Light).
Her subsequent stage credits include the Courtesan in Comedy of Errors and the witch in Into the Woods, as well as lead parts in The Crucible, Pericles, and South Pacific. For her work in the latter show, Eddy won an Arty Award.
Her first television part was in the sitcom The Drew Carey Show. A plethora of others was to follow. There were guest spots on shows like Married…With Children, Beverly Hills, 90210, Murphy Brown, and Family Matters, as well as recurring roles on Primetime Glick, Joan of Arcadia, and Burning Hollywood.
Sonya Eddy also appeared in a number of feature films, including Motel Blue, Patch Adams, Matchstick Men, Year of the Dog, and Seven Pounds. She joined the cast of General Hospital in 2006, and she has played head nurse Epiphany Johnson ever since. She also reprised the part in the primetime spinoff series, GH: Nightshift.
Among the actress’s multiple talents are improvisation, sketch artist, and vocalizing. She is a very talented voice-over artist. Saints Row 2 and Guild Wars 2 are among the video games to which she has lent her talents.
