Jason and Carly have always been a dynamic duo on General Hospital, and some fans have always wanted them to be more than friends. But the show may have just confirmed that a Jarly romance is out of the question.
The April 19, 2024 episode began with Carly (Laura Wright) walking into Jason’s (Steve Burton, who recently revealed the moment he almost walked off the GH set) new room above Bobbie’s where he was wearing a tank top and doing pushups. That was when she saw his new tattoo. Jason revealed to her that he got it because he wanted something that was only his, and thought about those he loved while he got inked: Jake (Hudson West), Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), Sam (Kelly Monaco), Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), and Monica (Leslie Charleson). Only half done with the tattoo by that point, he said that was when he finally allowed himself to think about her.
He called Carly tough, adaptive, and resilient, but she disagreed. The ultimate best friend goals came into play when she told him that while he was gone, she didn’t have him to share things with when she was happy or have him there to fix things when she was sad. “You do it for Jason,” she said she would tell herself during the tough times while he was gone.
When Diane (Carolyn Hennesy) showed up at Bobbie’s, she announced Jason is now half-owner of the Metro Court and they both needed to sign the transfer of ownership. A shocked Carly refused at first, saying it was on her to get it back, but Jason told her it never would have happened had he been there. A tearful Carly thanked him with a hug and Jason assured her the deal was done.
Jason and Carly’s relationship began in the 90s when Carly (then-Sarah Joy Brown) met Jason for the first time at Jake’s, played some pool, and hopped into his bed above the bar. Things only got messy in their love lives from there as Jason fell for Robin (Kimberly McCullough) and Carly had an affair with Tony (Brad Maule), but the ex-lovers promised they would be there for each other no matter what.
After years of being there for each other — from Michael’s (Chad Duell) birth to Sonny’s (Maurice Benard, who recently opened up about his personal mental health struggles) presumed death — the two entered into a marriage to protect Sonny’s organization, where their past romantic feelings began to come out again on their wedding night. Before they could consummate their marriage, Sonny came back home, and it wasn’t long after that Jason was presumed dead in Greece.
The two had another emotional moment on the April 15, 2024 episode as Carly confided in Jason about everything that happened between her and Sonny while he was gone. But what they ended things on was what confirmed they’d never be more than best friends.
“Sometimes, I just think about how it would’ve been so much better if I would have never loved Sonny and just stayed in love with you,” Carly admitted. “I like us the way we are,” Jason said, to which she replied, “I do, too.”
