Gregory Harrison was already a star before joining General Hospital. However, his portrayal of Gregory Chase gave him his first foray into the daytime genre and earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination this year in the Outstanding Supporting Actor category.

Key Takeaways

  • Gregory Harrison spent five years on GH as a Gregory Chase recast.
  • The actor hit it out of the park when Gregory was diagnosed with ALS.
  • Harrison’s final arc and Gregory’s death got him a much-deserved Emmy nod.

The Road That Led To The Daytime Emmys

In 2023, Gregory was diagnosed with ALS, something he kept from his kids, Chase (Josh Swickard) and Finn (Michael Easton). Harrison showed the real struggles facing someone with ALS while trying to battle it on his own.

Around the same time, Gregory formed a close bond with Tracy (Jane Elliot). The chemistry between Elliot and Harrison was one fire in every single scene they did as Tracy and Gregory’s friendship deepened.

Gregory was determined not to let his ALS have an impact on Chase marrying Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton). The months leading up to the wedding and even the day of, Gregory faced a slew of challenges from the horrible disease.

The character also spent time imparting words of wisdom to his children, his granddaughter Violet (Jophielle Love), Tracy, and other friends, such as Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Stella (Vernee Johnson).

Despite his condition deteriorating rapidly by May 2024, Gregory helped officiate the wedding of Brook Lynn and Chase with an assist from Tracy. It was a magical day all around for Gregory and his loved ones.

When the wedding was over that night, Gregory passed away in his sleep, kicking off another chain of events as his family and friends mourned him.

There is no question that Harrison deserves to take home his first Daytime Emmy for playing Gregory Chase’s battle with ALS. However, he has some stiff competition in the Outstanding Supporting category, including two other GH stars.

Tajh Bellow (TJ) and Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) are also nominated with Harrison. Rounding out the category are Days of our Lives star Blake Berris (Everett) and The Young and the Restless’ Michael Graziadei (Daniel).
