As Michael’s exit approaches on General Hospital, his portrayer, Chad Duell, discussed his departure and reveals that GH didn’t have to write it the way they did.
Leave The Door Open
In the second part of Duell’s episode of State of Mind, hosted by co-star and on-screen dad Maurice Benard (Sonny), the actor revealed the reason for his upcoming departure. “The core of it all is just taking some time away,” he said after explaining the recent changes in his life after becoming a dad and then losing his father suddenly. “Then you’re thankful to Frank [Valentini] for allowing the opportunity to come back.”

“He didn’t need to do that,” Benard noted after Duell mentioned how GH’s executive producer left the door open for his return. “I’m aware how blessed I am for that, so I’m very thankful,” Duell assured him.
Sparking Opinions
The co-stars also delved into the explosive way Michael has been written off. Many fans have voiced their disappointment with the storyline of Michael being the victim of an attack on Sonny and winding up on fire and in GH’s burn unit. However, Duell has a much different opinion on the story.
“I’m glad they did that,” Duell revealed about the fire. “As far as a typical kind of, like, what, I get shot or I blow up and I’m gone?” he said, possibly referring to the way GH wrote out Morgan (ex-Bryan Craig) in 2016 when the character was blown up in a car and never seen again (except in Sonny’s hallucinations).
“Very well done,” Benard agreed. “The fire they had and how the guy burned up and all that,” he said, referring to Duell’s stunt double.
