Cameron Mathison is making waves as one of daytime’s most hated characters on General Hospital. Fans may remember Mathison from his days as the beloved Ryan Lavery on All My Children, where he and Rebecca Budig’s Greenlee became a fan-favorite duo until the series’ final ABC episode aired on September 23, 2011. Now, Mathison has swapped the romantic lead for a revenge-fueled villain, and audiences can’t get enough.
An Apple A Day
Mathison, known for playing the upstanding, romantic lead in TV and film, shared with hosts Budig and Greg Rikaart on Soapy (released on Tuesday, September 30) what it’s been like stepping into Drew’s villainous shoes. The actor recounted a memorable fan encounter in a grocery store. “Someone threw an apple. They’re like, ‘Drew, you are horrible!’ I was in the produce section, and they threw it at me somewhat playfully, but not really,” Mathison laughed. “I ducked it like a ninja… actually I grabbed it… took a bite!”
From Hero To Zero
It’s the first time Mathison has been able to sink his teeth into a character like “Congressman Cutthroat.” Mathison explained, ““I haven’t had an opportunity to play a character like Drew. As Ryan on All My Children, he went through a phase where, remember, he almost hit Greenlee and we did the ‘Fight Club’ thing, but it was very short-lived and it was very clear as to why he was doing it. There was a lot of pain there and fans didn’t like that either. But, other than that, I’ve never had an opportunity like this.”
From fan-favorite heartthrob to daytime villain, Mathison’s journey as Drew proves that even the nicest guys can play the most dangerous roles—and daytime audiences are loving to hate every minute of it.
A Tough Year
No matter what befalls Drew, Mathison is one of the most well-liked actors in the soap industry. He has had a number of challenges this year, including losing his home in the California wildfires and the end of his marriage of 22 years.
