General Hospital has made a change in head writers. Veteran writer Patrick Mulcahey and current GH script editor/historian Elizabeth Korte are assuming the roles of co-head writers. GH scribes Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor will be departing the show.
Mulcahey is known to savvy soap fans for his well-crafted dialogue. The scribe got his first break by writing for the gone-but-never-forgotten NBC soap Texas, which starred Beverlee McKinsey as Iris Carrington Wheeler. He’s written for Guiding Light, Loving, Santa Barbara, General Hospital, and Bold and the Beautiful. Mulcahey has won seven Daytime Emmys for writing soap operas. He’s been awarded two Writers Guild of America Awards (both for writing Santa Barbara).
When shows need a strong powerful script, they’ve turned to Mulcahey. He wrote Stephanie’s heart attack revelation and fallout and numerous Eric (John McCook) v. Stephanie (Susan Flannery) showdowns on B&B and also, Mason Capwell (Lane Davies) ripping into his family on Santa Barbara. He co-wrote the teleplay to Loving‘s two-hour premiere movie with series head writer, Douglas Marland.
Viewers will remain divided till the end of time as to whether or not it was a good idea to kill off Maureen Bauer (Ellen Parker) on GL but few can deny that the funeral and aftermath episodes were daytime drama at its finest as Maureen’s family and loved ones dealt with her immeasurable loss. Mulcahey wrote the dialogue for those episodes.
Korte began her GH career 30 years ago in the script continuity department and has held a variety of positions on the writing team over the years.
Van Etten and O’Connor became the show’s head writing team in the summer of 2019. O’Connor began his daytime writing career at One Life to Live. He’s won three Writers Guild of America awards for his work on GH. Van Etten also started at OLTL (in 2006). He has won one Writers Guild of America Award for writing GH.
